The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a major recall on May 1, 2025, involving approximately 1.8 million Ninja Foodi multi-cooker pressure cookers due to a serious burn injury hazard that has already caused 2nd and 3rd degree burns on an untold number of people.

The recall affects the "Ninja Foodi OP300 Series Multi-Function Cookers," a popular countertop appliance that functions as both a pressure cooker and an air fryer. These devices are made by the SharkNinja corporation and marketed under the name Ninja with “TenderCrisp” technology.
These 1.8 million pressure cookers were sold nationwide from January 2019 through March 2025 at retailers like Walmart, Costco, Sam’s Club, Target, Amazon, and on Ninja’s website.
In total, approximately 1,846,400 units (plus 184,240 in Canada) are included in this voluntary recall by SharkNinja. The manufacturer of this multi-cooker also makes many other popular items like Shark vacuums and the Ninja line of kitchen appliances, like blenders and air fryers.

Defective Pressure Lid and Burn Hazard
The major hazard that prompted this Ninja Foodi recall is the defective pressure-cooking lid. According to CPSC, the pressure cooker lid can be opened while the cooker is in pressure cooking mode and is still pressurized and very hot, allowing hot food and liquids to erupt from the appliance.
When the machine (or the lid) is functioning properly, the lid of a pressure cooker should remain locked until all the pressure is safely released. However, with the Ninja Foodi models in the recall, consumers have been able to open the lid during cooking and have received serious burn injuries.
SharkNinja and the CPSC warn that this defect poses a high risk of severe burns since scalding liquids will instantly burst out when the lid comes off under pressure.
As a remedy, SharkNinja is offering a free, functional replacement lid to all owners of the recalled units by filling out this Recall Request form.
Anyone who owns this unit should stop using the pressure-cooking function immediately on all affected Ninja Foodi devices until they get their new lid.
Reported Injuries and Ongoing Lawsuits
Prior to this recall, there have been numerous incidents of the Ninja Foodi pressure cooker malfunctioning.
SharkNinja received at least 106 reports of burn injuries from these pressure cookers, and over 50 of those incidents involved second- or third-degree burns to users’ faces, arms, or bodies.
These types of burns are very serious injuries, demonstrating just how dangerous this product’s defect can be. Victims have described receiving severe burns when scalding hot soups, stews, and other contents erupted from the cooker when they removed the lid. These users claim they thought it was safe to remove the lid because the manual makes clear that the lid will not open unless it is safe to do so. But I guess that's the state of consumer goods in 2025, rushed to market and barely tested.
To date, 26 defective product lawsuits and claims of negligence have already been filed against SharkNinja by injured consumers.
These claims are known as product liability lawsuits, and they seek compensation for medical bills, pain and suffering, and other damages resulting from the burns.
The fact that dozens of legal claims were filed over the course of years before this recall highlights the severity of the issue. It also shows the company knew of the lid problems earlier and raises questions about whether the Ninja Foodi OP300 series will be discontinued going forward.
SharkNinja has publicly stated that customer safety is a “top priority” and that it initiated the recall to address the problem and prevent further harm. But, let's be real, profits are their top priority which is why it took them years to let the public know that this device might send you to the hospital with second or third degree burns on your face. I don't know about you, but that's something I would like to know before I buy a product for myself or for someone I love, like my mom.
Severity of Second- and Third-Degree Burns
The injuries caused by the defective Ninja Foodi Pressure Cooker have been severe, including second-degree and third-degree burns.
It’s important to understand just how serious these burns are and the medical care they require.
Second-degree burns damage both the outer layer of skin (epidermis) and the underlying layer (dermis). They typically cause blistering, intense pain, redness, and swelling.
A second-degree scald on the face or hands, for example, can be extremely painful and carries a risk of infection and scarring.
Treatment for second-degree burns often involves immediate cooling of the area, application of antibiotic creams, sterile dressings, and careful wound care. Smaller second-degree burns may heal at home with proper care over 1-3 weeks, but larger or deeper ones often require professional medical treatment to promote healing and prevent complications. Doctors may prescribe prescription burn creams (such as silver sulfadiazine) and will monitor for signs of infection.
If the burn covers a large area or a critical area (like the face), specialized burn care or even skin grafts might be needed to ensure proper healing and reduce scarring.

Third-degree burns are even more serious. A third-degree burn destroys all layers of the skin, including the epidermis and dermis, and can even extend deeper and damage underlying fat, muscle, or even bone.
Paradoxically, a third-degree burn might not be as immediately painful as a second-degree burn, because it can literally destroy the nerve endings in the skin. However, these burns are definitely classified as medical emergencies.
They typically require prompt, specialized treatment at a hospital or burn center. Treatment for third-degree burns usually involves surgical debridement (removal of dead tissue) to prevent infection, skin graft surgeries to replace damaged skin, IV fluids for hydration, and strong pain management.
Recovery from a third-degree burn is a long process and often results in permanent scarring. In the context of the Ninja Foodi incidents, victims with third-degree burns likely required hospitalization, skin grafting procedures, and could face lasting scars or physical therapy needs.
Both second and third-degree burns can also lead to complications like infections, scarring, and emotional trauma. This is why the Ninja pressure cooker’s defect is so dangerous; it can and has inflicted life-altering injuries on consumers in an instant.
